| Love on the Volleyball Court |
 |
The USYVL is mainly known as an instructional youth volleyball league where kids learn the fundamentals of volleyball. In Moorpark, it’s also known for making a love connection.
Laurie Ferguson describes in her story below how she and Paul fell in love.
“When I first met Paul, he was the site clinician and I was just a parent. My son's team didn't have a coach, so Paul called all the parents aside and asked if anyone would be willing to help coach the team. I said I would help out just for the day. Needless to say I became my son's coach that season.
We became friends, getting together to play volleyball. That summer on the 4th of July, I asked Paul to join my extended family at the beach for volleyball and a 4th of July party. He agreed (we now tease how I had to make the first move)! That was the official start of our relationship. |
|
That fall I became the Site Director. Paul and I find it very easy to work together for the Moorpark site. We have met some great people over the years. Because we have done this for so many years, we have seen a lot of our players move on to the high school and club level. We love to watch the high school boys and girls teams and point out our former USYVL players.
I think it's very important for the clinician and site director to work closely together. We feel we have one of the best sites, and take great pride in what we have done for our site. We have a great number of coaches return season after season. At coaches meetings they love to tease us on how we interact, Paul's always teasing me.
Paul has taught me a lot about volleyball and we love to play together. We both play on a co-ed team and Paul teaches an adult volleyball class, which I take.
We got engaged last year in May. My kids actually pressured Paul into asking (kidding) they did ask him quite a bit when he was going to marry their Mom. When we first started looking at sites for our reception, one site in particular was outside and sure enough right there was a sand volleyball court. Paul thought that would be the perfect reception. Playing volleyball in a formal dress didn't go over so good with me. So that idea didn't happen.
We are looking forward to our upcoming marriage, and of course many more years of playing volleyball. I guess I should thank the USYVL for us being together. I bet you didn't know you were a dating service!!”
Congratulations Paul and Laurie!

VOLVO Ride and Drive Event |
 |
On May 5th and June 2nd, 2007, Volvo, a new sponsor of the United States Youth Volleyball league hosted their first two Ride and Drive events! The first event was hosted at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura and the second at Acorn Park.
Both events were extremely successful and Volvo was very impressed with the response received. Each event had many parents taking their turn to drive a XC90 Sport 7-seat small SUV, S80 V8 4 door luxury car, S40 T5 affordable sporty 4 door car, XC70 station wagon, and a C70 sporty 2 door convertible. Every person who participated in the Volvo Ride and Drive Event received a $500 special offer that can be used toward the purchase or lease of an eligible new Volvo. This offer was exclusive to USYVL game days.
Volvo and USYVL will be teaming up for more Ride and Drive events next season. It’s impressive to see a USYVL game day in action and they are excited to be a part of it! |

“Cupertino Gail” Retires |
 |
Gail Bacon or “Mama G” as she is known and loved by everyone at her site and USYVL office, retires this spring 2007 season. Gail otherwise known as “G-Mama” nicknamed by her clinicians because in their words is the “mother Hen” of the Cupertino site is a great example of how extraordinary site directors are. When Gail first began with the USYVL, she had volunteered for the registration position. Veronica Sanchez, Director of Development, scheduled to meet with her at the parent meeting to train her. After an hour of explaining everything, Veronica said goodbye to Gail and gave her instructions to call her if she had any questions.
Her clinicians Michael Shorts, Khristine Cristobal, Matt Wong, and Jet Villavicencio have nothing but terrific things to say about Gail. Gail always has a smile on her face and when she talks to you in person or on the phone, she can always turn the day into a great one because of her bubbly personality. Gail will always make sure that her site is fun and that the kids and parents are having a great time. Her work is a reflection in the growth of the program; the Cupertino site is the 2nd largest USYVL site. |
|
| Clinician, Michael Shorts, gives an example of how Gail likes to make the kids laugh and have a good time. She has a special thing that she does after her announcements every day at practice. She has certain players pick a number between one and ten, then tells them to run that many laps for warm-up. So whenever Gail asks a question, the thundering response is “One!” Some questions she asks the kids are: “How old are you?” and the kids respond “One”! “How many teeth do you have?” and the kids respond “One”! She always wants the kids to be smiling and laughing.
Another clinician, Matt Wong, comments that Gail’s enthusiastic, detail oriented, thorough, fair, dedicated yet fun commitment to the youth participants, coaches, and the overall organization of the USYVL is unparalleled. She has made being a clinician very easy and enjoyable. He goes on to say that he doesn’t know if Gail will ever fully appreciate the difference she has made in the lives of countless kids and how much she has contributed to the community in general. Her presence and bubbly personality will be missed.
The USYVL will truly miss Gail, but they will always have the memories and gratitude of what Gail has made the USYVL Cupertino site into and knows that the next site director to take her place will have a big step to follow. Gail, we will miss you, but we have and always will appreciate everything you have done these past years. Thanks Gail and Congratulations on a job well done!
