Teaching the Fundamentals of Volleyball at the Dream Center |
USYVL’s most recent project has brought volleyball to youth in the Los Angeles inner-city. Last September, a group of kids from the Dream Center were introduced to volleyball at the JAYO Invitational. After that, the USYVL was contacted by The Dream Center’s sports coordinator to develop a program that would give the center's kids an opportunity to learn and play volleyball on a regular basis. Recently, the USYVL donated a net, hardware, needed equipment and staff time to the first 6-week session for kids of The Dream Center. For these children who have faced challenging times in their young lives, the program is making a huge difference. Teamwork skills, combined with learning mechanics, and athletic expression -- all part of volleyball -- are a great way to focus the mind and improve the body, as these kids have realized.

Get Involved |
We are still in need of volunteers to take on the positions of Site Directors and Clinicians at various sites. Getting involved is simple and we provide training and tons of support. The Site Director is one of two key people at the site that keep it organized, so we need folks that like to organize and enjoy being around kids and parents. The Clinician is the second key person at the site that takes care of teaching volleyball, so they must have playing or coaching experience. If you are interested in either of these positions, contact Veronica Sanchez B. at 1-888-988-7985 or Veronica@USYVL.org.

A Cool Event to Watch – or Serve on the Court With the AVP |
| The AVP Manhattan Beach Open is coming to Manhattan Beach, California this August 10-13. You can watch it live at the beach starting at 8:00 a.m., but if you can’t make it you can watch it on television live on NBC on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (EST) and Sunday at 4:30 p.m. (EST).
Would you like to be on the same court as the pros? Volunteer to retrieve volleyballs for the pros at the tournament, or help as a score keeper. This provides a great opportunity to work with AVP officials. One day you may find yourself on the court as a pro yourself. For tickets and information go to www.avp.com. To volunteer, contact the AVP Volunteer Coordinator at (310)426-8000 or volunteers@avp.com. |
Watch Out for Your Confirmation
|
It’s that time of year again! Starting August 5, USYVL confirmations will start hitting front doors everywhere. Please remember that the box contains a volleyball and confirmation packet. So please don’t throw away the box, since there is a confirmation packet inside which contains the parent meeting and coaching clinic dates and times, season schedule and other really important information! Once in your possession, the volleyball should be marked with the player’s first name initial and last name (i.e. V. Sanchez). No full names or phone numbers on the volleyballs please!
