With very warm weather headed to many USYVL sites this week, this is a good time to remind players, coaches, other volunteers and parents to stay hydrated. Staying hydrated not only helps with alertness, but also improves sport performance. It also keeps every day symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and dry skin at bay.  In hot weather situations, such as those anticipated this week, proper hydration is a health safety issue.


Water is ideal, but sports drinks can add a boost of electrolytes that can be beneficial. 

Warning signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, a rapid, weak heartbeat, muscle cramps, low blood pressure, cool, moist and pale skin, slightly elevated body temperature, weakness and dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, dark-colored urine, paleness and fainting. Monitor victims of heat exhaustion closely because heat exhaustion can quickly become a case of heat stroke.


First aid for heat exhaustion and stroke begins with getting the affected person out of the sun and heat, and cooling the victim off. In a mild case of heat exhaustion, the CDC advises relatively mild measures, like resting in an air conditioned room (or air conditioned car) and drinking cool liquids.

It’s important to stay hydrated, so be sure to drink plenty of fluids during heat waves. With proper hydration, your day on the court will be like any other fun day on the court. 

And, if you want to be teammate of the week, be sure to bring a cold bottle of water for a fellow player or coach!
