Why should you sign up for USYVL?

Each league follows a handful of guiding philosophies that ensure the success of USYVL programs.

Open Registration
Our leagues are open to all children ages 7-15 who want to learn and play volleyball. Interest and enthusiasm for volleyball are the only requirements for playing with USYVL! All programs are eight weeks long and meet twice per week. One day is for practices while the other day is for games (two 25-minute games).

Every Child Plays
Our goal is for each child to learn and play volleyball. Our programs ensure that each child has the opportunity to actively participate as a member of the team. No prior volleyball experience is required. A volleyball instructor is on site for each practice and game.

Balanced Teams
We require that every site at the beginning of each season create teams that are evenly balanced. It is more fun when teams are constructed with equal ability. Our four-person format allows kids to play every position. Teams are grouped by four age ranges: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15. Ages are defined according to how old participants are on November 1st of the current year. All teams in the league are coed.

Positive Coaching
Positive coaching generates a great spirit to help each child learn and develop volleyball skills. We train and encourage our coaches to make the extra effort to understand the needs of each player and offer positive instruction to participants rather than negative criticism. Instruction includes learning the basics of the game including: serving, setting, passing, spiking, and blocking.

Good Sportsmanship
We create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude. Our programs are designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of USYVL.

Last Saturday, Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California inducted USYVL Executive Director, Randy Sapoznik into the volleyball Hall of Fame at the college. The Hall of Fame ceremony occurred between the second and third sets of the championship match of the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) featuring Orange Coast College and El Camino College.

Sapoznik is 1987 alumni of Pierce College and played on the volleyball team during his time with the Brahmas. Joining Sapoznik as a Pierce College Hall of Fame inductee were Eunetta Pickett, a longtime volleyball referee, and Kevin Barnett, former player and volleyball color commentator.

Sapoznik is the Co-Founder of USYVL and currently serves as the Executive Director. USYVL, founded in 1997, began in Southern California with 139 players. Today that number has grown to more than 15,000 players annually, nationwide. This phenomenal growth reflects Sapoznik’s leadership, vision, and commitment to youth volleyball programs that promote a healthy competitive sports atmosphere and the development of responsible individuals.

For two decades his leadership and hard work has provided a natural pipeline tool for young children to experience and learn the sport of volleyball and to assist young people in developing an appreciation for good sportsmanship and lifelong participation. Several USYVL participants have advanced on to play at the NCAA level.

USYVL joins Pierce College in recognizing Sapoznik’s valuable contribution to the sport of volleyball, in particular the growth in youth programs that give children a fun and safe place to learn and play volleyball.

USYVL is a volunteer organization with more than 5,000 parents giving their time and talents to work as coaches and administrators at our league sites. If you have not already signed up to volunteer at one of our sites, we encourage you to get involved. Volunteers help coach, set up courts, and monitor drills and games. You can sign up online or you can simply contact your league Site Director.

The best sites are those where everyone is involved. No previous experience is required. USYVL will assist our volunteers to enhance the experience for participants. Anyone can volunteer, Moms, Dads, Sisters, Brothers, and Grandparents. You can make a difference.

Each participant receives a volleyball as part of registration. We encourage you to bring your ball to practices and games. USYVL provides each player with a season t-shirt (Red, White, or Blue). Each league site will receive player t-shirts during the second week of the season schedule. Players are encouraged to wear a shirt, shorts, athletic pants and shoes for practices and games. Every USYVL site provides court equipment and nets.
